Beko PLC is the UK and Ireland subsidiary of Arçelik A.S., one of the largest household appliance producers in Europe, distributing over 2.9 million products every year. As number one in the large home appliance sector in the UK, 1 in 4 homes has appliances from Beko.
The opportunity
The Lighthouse team have been working with Beko for a number of years in an advisory capacity, developing their sustainability strategy and supporting on progressive action towards a low carbon future. Beko were keen to lead the industry and to empower employees to have carbon conversations with key customers, including Currys and Howdens. They recognise that in order to tackle Scope 3 emissions, they also need their suppliers to be equipped to begin this journey too. Embedding knowledge and building internal capacity became key.
What we delivered
Lighthouse delivered a scalable training plan for Beko, initiated in January 2022, with delivery of Carbon Literacy training to the Sustainability Team and Committee. From this point, dedicated training was provided to the Board of Directors; this secured their buy-in but crucially, fired up their ambition to lead the sector.
Beko committed to achieve Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) Gold status and to realise this ambition, Lighthouse took two of the Beko team through the Carbon Literacy Train the Trainer course and guided them through the development, accreditation and delivery of their in-house Carbon Literacy programme, customised to reflect their own activities and aims. Lighthouse remained in a support capacity, facilitating initial internal training delivery to build confidence and latterly, guiding the team through the CLO process.
The outcome
The team at Beko have gone from strength to strength, having now delivered Carbon Literacy training to almost two-thirds of the company, with additional training delivered to key suppliers and communications partners. Just two years from that very first training course, Beko achieved their CLO Gold status in December 2023.
Feedback on the training has been overwhelmingly positive. The business is benefitting from a common language and understanding of the importance of carbon reduction across all areas business operations, and increasingly extending out to their value chain. Confidence is high and conversations about carbon are now commonplace. Decisions are more likely to be challenged through a carbon lens and ideas to reduce emissions are being put into action.
Kay Ainsworth, Product Training Development Manager, Beko:
“Lighthouse Sustainability were key to our Carbon Literacy journey. From starting us off on the right track, guiding us, inspiring, and helping all to understand the importance to us personally of our own carbon footprints and to our business. They are professional, knowledgeable, and best in class. We would not be where we are without their consultancy, training, and advice. Achieving Gold accreditation has been a great achievement and down to us all working together.”
Emma Burlow, Founder, Lighthouse Sustainability:
“It’s been really rewarding to work with the team at Beko. Such a pleasure to partner with a progressive and dedicated organisation. From Lighthouse’s side, we’ve delivered a scalable training plan, aimed at building internal capacity, which demonstrates the power of lighting the touchpaper and letting it go! Many congratulations to the team on this fantastic achievement.”
